My 13 year old got scammed for $40 on Fortnite

Some kid online convinced him to buy v-bucks to "unlock items" and then just ghosted him. He's devastated and I'm pissed because I thought we had talked about this stuff. I know kids are stupid with money but this feels different. Going to make him earn back the $40 but now I'm paranoid about what else he's doing online. Checked his Discord history and it's mostly normal but how do you even monitor this without being that guy? Also does anyone actually report these scammers or is it a waste of time?

Ugh, that's a frustrating one. At 13 they think they're invincible but online scams hit different. I'd let him cool off for a day then sit down and talk through what happened without getting too angry - he's probably mad at himself already.

That's rough, sorry dude. The conversation with him after is just as important as the $40 loss - he learned something about trusting strangers online, which is actually valuable even though it sucks. Maybe frame it as a lesson earned.
