This scared the hell out of me. My son told me a grown man messaged him on Discord asking to play a game together and wanted to move to a private chat. I told him no and he blocked the person, but my heart is still racing. We talked about it that night but I don't want to overreact and make him secretive about online stuff. How do you balance warning them without making them paranoid?
This is the scariest part of having kids online. Make sure he knows nothing he said to this person matters and that adults doing this are predators, period. No shame on him for being contacted.
Report the account and then check his friends list. If this guy messaged him cold, he might have tried others too. Also check Discord settings and tighten who can message him.
Good on your son for telling you. A lot of kids hide stuff like this out of embarrassment. Report to Discord and block immediately. Then have a conversation about why adults messaging kids is a hard no.
Screenshot everything before blocking. You might need it if you want to report to authorities depending on what was said. Most of the time it's creeps fishing but document it anyway.
The fact that your kid felt comfortable telling you is huge. That's the foundation that keeps him safe going forward. Follow up on the Discord stuff but also let him know you're proud he reported it.

Had a similar scare with my 14yo last year. Took it as a sign to actually sit down and talk about online safety instead of just assuming he knew. Might be a good opportunity for that conversation while it's fresh.
