My 5 year old found YouTube on the TV and watched like an hour of random garbage

Walked in and he's watching some weird prank channel that was totally inappropriate. He was laughing his butt off but I felt like a terrible parent for not monitoring better. Now I'm paranoid about what else he could stumble onto. Do you guys monitor every single thing or am I overthinking this? How do you keep them safe without being crazy overprotective?

Don't beat yourself up over it, happens to all of us. I've had my daughter stumble onto weird stuff too. The key is just being aware now and maybe setting up some parental controls so it doesn't happen again.

You're not a terrible parent, you're just human. One hour of random YouTube isn't going to ruin him, and now you know to lock it down better. We all have these moments.

This happened to me last month and I felt awful too, but honestly you caught it and you're already thinking about how to prevent it next time. That's good parenting right there.
