My 7yo is obsessed with Roblox - is it actually safe?

So my son Marcus keeps begging to play Roblox like all his friends at school. I've read some scary stuff online about predators in games but I also don't want to be the dad who bans everything. Has anyone actually let their kids play it? What precautions did you set up? He's been pretty responsible with iPad time so far but this feels different somehow.
