My 8yo is addicted to Roblox, need advice

So my son has gotten completely hooked on Roblox the past few months. It started innocent enough but now he's asking for Robux constantly and getting upset when we cut him off. We've tried setting daily limits but he sneaks extra time on the iPad. I'm worried about his eyes and just the overall screen time at this point. Anyone else dealing with this? What's worked for you guys? I don't want to be the bad guy but this has to stop.

The Robux requests are rough because they come up every single day, right? We started making our son earn screen time with chores instead of just handing it to him. Took a few weeks but he got over it faster than we expected.

Yeah that's the tough one. My son went through the same thing with gaming a few months back. We had to set hard limits on screen time and honestly just had to be the bad guy about it. Robux is basically a slot machine for kids, so I feel you on that front.

Have you looked into the social side of things? A lot of times if your kid is addicted it's because he's playing with friends online. Might be worth understanding which games he's into and why instead of just limiting hours.

The problem with Roblox is the in-game economy and social pressure to keep playing. All his friends are probably on it. Maybe instead of cutting him off completely, set specific playtimes and make sure he has offline activities he enjoys too.

Roblox is rough because it's actually social, so just banning it feels like you're isolating him from his friends. But yeah, the addictive design is real. We had to set strict time limits and make sure there are other things he actually wants to do more.

Try playing some Roblox games with him if you haven't already. Not every game on the platform is designed to be addictive. Some are actually pretty creative and chill. Might help you understand what's pulling him in.
