My 9 year old lied about playing Fortnite and I'm actually worried

Found out he's been sneaking on his buddy's account at school. He told us he was playing Minecraft and we said okay. I looked it up and Fortnite isn't even that violent compared to what we thought but now I'm worried about the lying part, not the game. We had a whole conversation about honesty and he seems to get it. My dad just would have whipped me. I'm trying to do the whole talk-it-out thing but sometimes I wonder if I'm being too soft. Anyone deal with kids lying about screen stuff? How did you handle it?

Man, the lying part is what gets me too. I'd sit him down and ask why he felt he needed to hide it rather than just talking to you about wanting to try something new. That conversation might matter more than the game itself.

At 9, kids are testing boundaries but they also want to be honest with their parents. Maybe work out a deal where he can play Fortnite at home under your watch for a set time, and he doesn't have to sneak around.
