So my 12 year old was watching YouTube and somehow ended up at a video about VPNs and now she thinks she's some kind of hacker. Shes asking me a bunch of questions about proxies and hiding her IP address. I dont want to be the fun police but also... should I be worried? Whats the line between curious kid and actual problem behavior? She still has all her apps locked down but now Im paranoid.
YouTube rabbit holes are wild. At 12 she's probably starting to wonder about privacy stuff anyway. I'd have the conversation about what VPNs actually do and set clear boundaries without making it forbidden fruit. What did she say about why she wanted one?
This is actually a good teaching moment. Instead of shutting it down completely, maybe talk to her about what a VPN does, why people use them, and why that's not something she needs right now. Better than her just getting sneakier about it.
The algorithm can send them down crazy paths. My daughter found some sketchy stuff too. I just had an honest chat about what's safe and what isn't rather than going full lockdown. Works better than you'd think.
Oh man, the fact that she's curious is actually kind of good but yeah you'll want to shut that down quick. Have the conversation about why you control internet in your house and what's appropriate for her age. Better from you than from some random video.
This is the digital parenting nightmare right here. One random video and now you've got questions. I'd just be honest with her about why you have parental controls and what they're for. She's old enough to understand the real reasons.
