My kid wants a gaming PC, help me understand fortnite

So my 12 year old won't stop asking for a gaming PC so he can play Fortnite with his friends. I literally have no idea what the game is about besides shooting people. Is it violent? Is it a waste of money? All his friends have PCs and he's the only one who doesn't. How much does a decent setup cost and is it even worth it or am I just feeding an addiction?

Fair warning, Fortnite is free to play so he doesn't need a PC necessarily, but yeah the peer pressure around having a decent setup is real at that age. We got our oldest a mid-range rig and it's been a good investment for his confidence socially.

I looked into this for my son too. If you go the PC route, make sure you understand what you're actually paying for - the initial cost is just the start. Also maybe play a few matches with him so you actually know what you're approving?

My 12 year old is the same way. I spent time actually watching some Fortnite streams to understand what he's into. The gaming PC piece is legit - a lot of his friends do have setups. But I set a firm rule: grades stay up, screentime limits are real, and we game together sometimes.
