Question about YouTube Kids vs regular YouTube

Thinking about switching my 6yo from YouTube Kids to regular YouTube since he keeps complaining the content is too babyish. I know regular YouTube has ads and potentially sketchy stuff mixed in. What's everyone's take on this transition? Do you use parental controls on the regular version or is YouTube Kids the safer move for a bit longer?

I've been through this exact thing with my kids. YouTube Kids does feel restrictive once they hit that age, but regular YouTube is basically the Wild West. Maybe compromise with a supervised account where you can curate channels he's allowed to watch? Gives him more mature content without the random rabbit holes.

That 'too babyish' complaint is tough because you know he's right but you also know what he'll find if you give him free rein. We ended up setting up parental controls on regular YouTube and reviewing his watch history weekly. It's not perfect but it's a middle ground that's worked for us.
