Roblox spending spree

UPDATE: My 12yo spent $47 on Robux without asking me. FORTY SEVEN DOLLARS. On virtual currency for a game. I had my card saved to his account for "emergencies" which apparently includes limited-time avatar skins.

I've now removed the card, turned on purchase restrictions, and he's doing chores to pay me back. But I'm genuinely curious - how do you guys handle this? Do you let them have ANY spending capability or is it a hard no?

Have you set up purchase controls on Roblox? You can require a password for transactions over a certain amount. Might have saved you this headache if you'd done it earlier but at least you know now.

This is why I switched my payment method to Google Play balance that I control manually. Takes one extra step to spend money and honestly that's been enough to slow my kids down.

One thing that helped us was letting our kid pick what chores to do to earn it back instead of just assigning punishments. Somehow having agency in the repayment made it stick better.

My 11yo did something similar. We made him do chores to pay it back. Took him three weeks. He's been way more careful with digital spending since then.

Forty seven dollars is basically a tuition payment for the lesson you're about to teach. At least you caught it now before it became a habit. Did you find out how he spent it? Some kids are just impulse buyers, others are trying to keep up with friends.

Does he understand the actual money involved? Sometimes kids don't connect Robux to real dollars. Might be worth sitting down and showing him the conversion.
