So my son has been asking for more tablet time and I've been saying no because he's already getting an hour after school. My wife thinks I'm being too rigid but I feel like once you start saying yes to everything they'll never stop asking. He's a good kid, does his homework, plays outside. Am I overthinking this or is an hour a day reasonable for a second grader?
I went through this with my oldest when he was that age. The tablet became this massive battle. What worked for us was replacing it with something else he actually wanted to do. Once we got him a baseball glove and started throwing in the yard, the tablet requests dropped like 50%. Just a thought.
Man, I think you're actually being reasonable here. My 7 year old was the same way last year. I set a hard limit at 1 hour on school days and he pushed back constantly. But once he got into other stuff like legos and drawing, he forgot about it. Kids will always want more screen time if you let them. You're doing the right thing.
Not too strict at all. I've been reading a lot about this and the experts say 7 year olds shouldn't be getting more than an hour or two a day anyway. The thing is, they'll always ask for more because the apps are designed to be addictive. How much is he currently getting?

Six months in and I'm already dreading the day my son gets old enough to ask for this stuff. Honestly your instinct sounds right. Kids don't need that much screen time and they definitely don't need parents second-guessing themselves on it.
