Screen time battle with 8yo - what actually works?

So my son is obsessed with Roblox and honestly I'm losing the battle. We tried the 1 hour a day rule but he just melts down when it's time to stop. Wife thinks I'm too strict, I think she enables it. We're thinking about some kind of parental control app but not sure which ones actually work or if they just make things worse. Anyone else dealing with this? What's your actual system that doesn't cause a full meltdown?
