His mom thinks he needs one for safety/staying in touch. I think 10 is too young. We'd have it for emergencies but obviously he'd want to use it for games and texting friends. Parents at his school say their kids have phones. What age did you guys cave and let them have their own device? Any regrets?
10 feels young to me too, but if his mom wants one for safety, maybe a basic phone with limited contacts and apps? No social media, emergency calls and texts only. You two could work out something in the middle that doesn't turn into a gaming device.
I'd say stick to your gut on this one. You know your kid and what they're ready for. If his mom wants a phone for emergencies, that's different from a gaming device - maybe that's where you find the middle ground.

This is a co-parenting call you guys need to make together since you're both involved. If safety is the real concern, there are options that aren't full smartphones - the games can wait a few years.
