Should I let my 10yo have his own phone yet?

His friends all have phones and he's asking for one for his birthday. I'm torn because on one hand he's more responsible than some kids but on the other hand I know how much time kids waste on these things. We don't have unlimited data so that's at least a built in limit. What age did you guys let your kids have phones? Any tips on keeping it from becoming a monster?

This is the tough one. I'd lean toward waiting another year or two if possible. 10 is getting close but there's a difference between 10 and 12 developmentally. When you do get him one, definitely set parental controls and check in on what he's doing with it regularly.

Wait what was the question again? Just kidding. But seriously I'd talk to some of the other parents to see what they're doing. Sometimes you find out the kids aren't actually using their phones as much as you think they are.

My take is that if his friends all have phones, he's probably feeling left out more than you realize. But you can start small with a simple phone and upgrade later. Doesn't have to be a fancy smartphone right away.

The everyone else has one argument is rough because it's kind of valid but also not the best reason to make the decision. I'd probably compromise with a basic phone that can text and call but doesn't have unlimited data or social apps yet.
