Should I let my 8yo have a gaming PC or am I asking for trouble?

So my son has been asking for a gaming PC for like 6 months now. He's good at school, does his chores, and honestly spends most of his screen time on educational stuff or age appropriate games on the Switch. My wife thinks we should wait until he's older but I'm wondering if getting him a gaming PC with parental controls and a strict schedule would actually be better than him sneaking around trying to play on my work laptop. Anyone else dealt with this? What age did you feel comfortable letting your kids have their own gaming setup?
