Thinking about getting my son a kids smart watch so he can call us when he needs to. He's starting to want more independence but I'm not ready for a full phone yet. Anyone have experience with these? Which ones are actually reliable?
That's a good age to start. The Gizmo watch gets solid reviews and lets you actually see where he is which beats calling out. My son's had one for a year now and it's peace of mind we definitely needed.
My 6yo isn't quite ready for one yet but I'm definitely thinking about it. That sweet spot between independence and safety is tough to navigate. Let us know what model you end up going with!
I went the smart watch route with my middle kid at 7 and it's been solid. He feels independent, we can actually reach him, and it takes the edge off the anxiety. Worth it if you can swing it.
Just make sure you set boundaries on the thing or it becomes a toy. My daughter's watch was useful for about two weeks before she started trying to download apps and mess with settings. Lock it down tight.

The safety aspect is worth it at that age. Starting middle school is a big transition and knowing he can reach you if something goes wrong helps. The watches aren't as feature heavy as phones so it's a good middle ground.
