Son got hacked on Roblox - lessons learned

So my 9 year old's Roblox account got compromised and someone spent like 300 Robux that I had linked to my card. Not a huge deal money wise but man it was a wake up call. Turns out he was sharing his password with friends which is apparently a thing kids do. We've had the security talk now and I set up 2FA on everything. Also found out he was playing games way above his age rating. Anyway just wanted to vent and warn other parents to check what your kids are actually playing and make sure passwords stay private.

That sucks man. At least 300 Robux is less than it could have been. The real question is whether he had a strong password or if it was something he reused. Good opportunity to talk security even though it cost you.

The Roblox support team is usually pretty good about this stuff. I'd definitely reach out to them with screenshots of the unauthorized purchases. Also this is a good teaching moment for your 9yo about password strength and not clicking random links. We went through this and it actually led to some good conversations about internet safety.

Rough. Did you end up getting those Robux refunded? I had a similar thing happen and Roblox actually reversed it for us after I explained the account was compromised by a minor.

Oh man, that's the worst feeling. We had something similar happen to our daughter on a different platform and I felt so guilty for not checking the account more often. The good news is 300 Robux is pretty manageable - I'd hit up Roblox support and explain what happened. They're usually pretty decent about refunding stuff like that, especially if it's a compromised account.

This is exactly why I check my kids' accounts regularly now. Sorry that happened. The good news is Roblox customer service usually helps if you contact them with proof of the hack. Document everything and reach out to their support team.

Okay so what's the lesson you're teaching him about passwords and account security? This could be a turning point moment for him to understand why we care about this stuff.

This is why I nuked my kids' access to any stored payment methods. Now if they want something they have to ask me and I have to actively approve it. Sucks because it's extra steps but 300 bucks being unauthorized is not how I want to learn a lesson. Did you change the password on the main account too?
