Son got into some sketchy Discord servers, how do I handle this

Found out my 13 year old has been in Discord with some kids I don't know saying some pretty weird stuff. Not anything illegal but definitely stuff he shouldn't be around. I freaked out and took his computer away which probably wasn't the best move. Now he's mad and won't talk to me about it. How do you guys balance monitoring with trust? I don't want to be the dad who ruins his social life but I also don't want him groomed or bullied or worse.

13 is that age where they want independence but they're not ready to handle all the options yet. You might need to have the conversation about online safety without it turning into you banning everything.

Discord can get sketchy fast. I'd definitely check out what servers he's in and who he's talking to. The 'weird stuff' comment is the red flag for me. What kind of stuff are we talking about?

At 13 he's going to push back pretty hard if you come down too strict. Maybe ask him to walk you through what he's doing on there? Show interest instead of just alarm.
