Son wants a phone at 11, am I crazy to say no?

His friends apparently all have phones now. He says he needs one for group chats and to stay connected. I feel like this is wild for an 11 year old but maybe im just old? Were thinking of waiting til 13 but hes already upset about it. Theres no parental controls that feel adequate to me either. Like I can limit screen time but whats he actually doing on there? Anyone else dealing with this pressure from their kids?
