Switched to a dumb phone trial - actual question

Quick question - has anyone actually done the "dumb phone for kids" thing or is that just something I read on parenting blogs? Like literally just a basic phone for calling/texting? My 13yo is getting ridiculous with his smart phone and I'm tempted to just... take it away and replace it with something basic for 3 months to reset his expectations. But I worry he'll just resent me and sneak around. Is this an actual solution or just me being old-fashioned?
