The Fortnite phase hit and I'm not ready

My 10yo just discovered Fortnite through school friends and suddenly that's ALL he wants to talk about. I let him play for maybe 45 mins a day on weekends. The thing is... it's not a terrible game? He's not getting toxic, he's actually learning strategy and teamwork. But omg the DESIRE to play more is INTENSE. He asks constantly. Negotiates for more time. I'm holding the line but it's exhausting. Anyone else dealing with this right now? How long does the obsession phase last? 😅

I feel you. My daughter is in the Valorant phase now and it's constant. The good news is at 10 he's not spending actual money on it yet hopefully. Wait until he discovers the cosmetics.

Set a timer and stick to it. Two hours a day max and he has to earn it with other stuff. Sounds harsh but kids actually respect structure and he'll stop making it his entire personality if it's limited.

The Fortnite thing is real and honestly it does get easier. My son talked about it nonstop for like 6 months and now he's moved on to Baldur's Gate 3. Just set some boundaries on screen time and you'll be fine. Maybe even learn what a Victory Royale is so you can talk about it with him.

Have you tried playing a few matches with him? I know it sounds like torture but my 11yo thought it was the coolest thing when I actually logged in and ran around. We got absolutely demolished but he laughed so hard. Might be a good way to bond and also monitor what he's actually doing.

This phase will pass but while you're in it maybe check his chat settings. A lot of parents don't realize the game lets kids chat with random people online. Might be worth making sure that's off if it isn't already.
