Thinking about getting my kid a phone - when is too early?
He's 10 and keeps asking for a phone like everyone in his grade supposedly has. I want to give him some independence and teach him responsibility but I'm also terrified of him seeing stuff he shouldn't or getting addicted to TikTok. What age did you guys break down and get your kids phones? What kind of parental controls are actually worth it?
I had this conversation with all three of mine at different ages. What worked for me was getting a basic phone first without data, just calls and texts. Gave him some responsibility before jumping into the smartphone thing.
Something that helped me was asking my kid what he actually needed it for. Turns out mine wanted it mostly for texting friends, which opened up other options. Worth having that conversation first.
