TikTok algorithm showing my 14yo some really inappropriate content

I don't monitor everything, I trust her to make decent choices, but I noticed her FYP has some pretty sketchy stuff on it. When I asked her about it she got defensive. Tried explaining why I'm concerned without being preachy but she just rolled her eyes. Do any of you use parental controls on TikTok? Or am I overreacting? I remember being 14 and not wanting my parents in my business so I'm trying to find the balance between being involved and being creepy.

This is exactly why I've had to get more involved with the algorithm stuff. At 14 it's tricky because you don't want to be the controlling parent but you also can't just let it run wild. Have you tried adjusting her privacy settings?

The trust is important but those algorithms are designed to push boundaries. I had the same issue and ended up having a calm conversation about how the app itself works rather than blaming her. Changed how she thinks about it.

Trust her judgment but verify occasionally. The algorithm doesn't care about what's appropriate, it just cares about engagement. Might be time for a check-in conversation.
