What gaming setup is age appropriate for a 7 year old?

My son is asking for a Nintendo Switch for his birthday. Most of his friends have one and he wants to play with them online. I'm cool with games like Mario and Pokemon but I'm wondering about the online component. Can I control who he plays with? What games are good for this age? I don't want to be the dad who says no to everything but I also want to keep him safe.

Seven is a good age honestly. Switch is solid - I'd say go for it. My kids got theirs around that age and it's been great for road trips and keeping them occupied during my commute home.

We got the Switch Lite for our oldest at 7 and haven't regretted it. Just set parental controls from day one. It's worth it for the game library alone.

The friend factor is real. My son was the last one on his sports team to get one and he felt kind of left out. Ended up being a good birthday present.
