What's a good phone for a 12 year old?

Okay so my daughter is turning 12 and a lot of her friends have phones. We've been holding out but I think it's time. I want something that I can monitor and control but also doesn't make her feel like a baby. Looking at iPhone SE or maybe a basic Android. Anyone have recommendations? Also what parental control apps actually work or are they easy to get around?
