What's a reasonable age for a phone?

Kid's 10 and asking for a phone like everyone else in his class supposedly has. I'm skeptical that EVERYONE has one but also don't want him to feel left out. Wife says 12, I'm thinking 13. But then he'll need it for safety stuff eventually. What age did you guys give yours a phone and what kind of restrictions did you set up? Android or iPhone? Looking for real world advice not the preachy stuff.

10 is honestly too young IMO. I know it feels like every kid has one but that's not actually true. My rule is when they can pay for it themselves or at least contribute, they're ready to handle the responsibility.
