What's the deal with Fortnite battle passes?

My 9yo wants to spend $10 a month on a battle pass for Fortnite. I don't really get it but he says all his friends have it. Is this a scam or is this actually a thing? How do I know if he's just asking for a game addiction?

Not a scam but it's basically cosmetics and a season pass that resets. Ten bucks a month adds up quick though. My son wanted one too and we made a deal that he earns it through chores instead.
