When do kids get their first phone, honest answers only

Oldest is 12 and asking for a phone constantly. All his friends have one apparently. I know I can monitor it with apps but also I was not that connected at his age and turned out fine. But also he needs to learn digital responsibility at some point right? Seems like this is the thing every parent stresses about. What's the real move here, not the helicopter parent move but like reasonable.
