YouTube - how do you actually keep it safe?

I feel like YouTube Kids is the lesser of evils but I've heard so many stories about weird content slipping through. My 6yo watches it for maybe 20 mins most days - mostly Blippi and some Lego content. I spot check occasionally but I can't monitor every second. Do any of you just... let them use regular YouTube with parental controls on? Or are you basically staying in the room the whole time? Curious what people actually do vs what the advice columns say to do.
