Quick question - is YouTube Kids actually decent for filtering stuff or should I just avoid YouTube altogether for my 6yo? We use it mostly for educational stuff (like science channels) but I'm paranoid about the algorithm showing weird content. Anyone trust it?
YouTube Kids is good enough that I don't feel guilty putting it on but not so good that I'd leave my 5 year old alone with unlimited access. Right in the middle.
The problem with YouTube Kids is you still occasionally get channels that are technically appropriate but super weird and overstimulating. Your mileage may vary.
We use it but paired with actual parental controls on the tablet itself. YouTube Kids + screen time limits and app blockers = actually works pretty well.
YouTube Kids isn't perfect but it's way better than regular YouTube. My kids still manage to find weird stuff sometimes but the algorithm is at least trying to be age appropriate.

Honest answer: it's decent enough to buy you 30 minutes of peace while you cook dinner but don't expect it to be foolproof. We still monitor what they watch on it.
If you want to avoid YouTube altogether then honestly PBS Kids app or Roku Kids are way more curated. Fewer options but way less garbage to filter through.
