I know I shouldn't rely on it so much but honestly YouTube Kids gives me like 20 minutes of peace when I'm making dinner. My kids love it and it's educational sometimes but I feel guilty. The app does a decent job filtering but I still check what they're watching. Anyone else use it regularly or am I doing something wrong here?
I've got four kids and I can tell you that some screen time is way better than a meltdown in the kitchen. The guilt is real but it's also not deserved. You're still present and engaged as a parent even if you're using the tools available.
20 minutes of peace is 20 minutes you can actually breathe. I think there's a healthy middle ground between never using it and using it as a constant babysitter. You're doing fine.
I feel this in my soul. YouTube Kids is a lifesaver but yeah sometimes I wonder if I'm leaning on it too much. At least it's curated though, that's something.
The guilt around screen time is real but also be honest with yourself about what you need to function as a parent. If YouTube Kids gives you 20 minutes to make dinner without losing your mind, that's time well spent.
As long as it's not all day every day you're good. Sometimes you need the break and the kid gets some content. That's just parenting in 2024.
