YouTube Kids is a Trap - Started as Harmless Now He's Obsessed

We thought YouTube Kids would be safer and educational. Started with like 30 mins a day of actual learning content. Now three months later he's watching garbage toy unboxing videos for hours if we let him. The algorithm just keeps feeding him stuff. We tried limiting it but now we get complete meltdowns. I feel like a terrible parent because I know the research says this is bad for his developing brain but also my 5 year old is feral if he doesn't get screen time and I need like 20 minutes to cook dinner without him destroying the house. Anyone else struggling with this? How do you handle the tantrums when you cut him off?

YouTube Kids is not as safe as the algorithm wants you to think. We learned that the hard way. The endless scroll is designed to addict and kids have zero impulse control against that. You're not being too strict by pulling back now.

We set a 20 minute timer on YouTube and stick to it. Sounds easy but man the meltdowns when it ends are real. But after a few weeks they stop fighting it because they know that's the rule. Consistency is everything.

Once they get hooked on the recommended videos it's basically impossible to break unless you just cut it off. Which sucks but works. We replaced YouTube time with other stuff - building things, outside time, actual books. It took two weeks then he forgot about it.

YouTube Kids definitely pulls you in that direction. We started educational content too and suddenly it's all algorithmic recommendations. Sounds like you caught it though, better to reset now than let it go further.

The trap with YouTube Kids is it feels safe so you don't notice the time adding up. Might be time to reset expectations with him about daily limits and actually stick to them. Tough but worth it.

The algorithm is literally designed by smart people to keep your kid watching. You're not overreacting. I'd pull him back, talk about why, and maybe find one or two specific channels you approve of instead of letting him browse.
