YouTube Kids - is it actually safer or just marketing?

Getting conflicting info. Some parents swear by it, others say it's still full of weird stuff that slips through. We're thinking of getting it for our 5yo since she's been watching regular YouTube at grandma's house and some of the content is... questionable.

Do you actually use YouTube Kids? Is the content filter legit or is it just a way to make parents feel better? Any horror stories?
