Had a sketchy situation yesterday where my 5yo somehow ended up watching some weird unmoderated content that got progressively more inappropriate. I thought YouTube Kids filtered stuff but clearly it doesn't catch everything. We switched to Nebula Kids and it's way more locked down, but wanted to warn everyone that the "safety" of YouTube Kids is oversold. Just my experience but wanted to put it out there.
Did you report it to YouTube? I know it doesn't fix the problem retroactively but at least it helps flag that content for them to review. Sorry that happened to your kid man, that's frustrating.
This is exactly why we use screen time limits and I sit with my kids when they're watching anything. YouTube's algorithm is designed to keep them watching, not to keep them safe. What kind of content did your 5yo stumble into?
Yeah YouTube Kids has some serious gaps in their moderation system. My 4yo found some creepy nursery rhyme remixes that honestly gave me the chills. I switched to a whitelist approach where I manually approve every channel now, way more work but at least I know what he's watching.
The scary thing is YouTube Kids is SUPPOSED to be the safe version and it still has problems. Amazon Prime Kids has been better for us honestly, less weird stuff sneaking through.

We got burned by this too about 6 months ago. Now we only use Disney+ and Apple TV+. Costs a bit more but the content is actually vetted and I can actually relax when he's watching something.
