YouTube Kids vs just regular YouTube with parental controls?

Got into an argument with my wife about this. She wants to use YouTube Kids because she thinks it's safer, but honestly the algorithm seems worse to me and the content is pretty limited. I've been using regular YouTube with restricted mode and tight parental controls on my 9yo's account. Are we both overthinking this or is there a real difference?

I'd lean toward YouTube Kids for the younger years. Once they're older, regular YouTube with strong parental controls becomes more reasonable. But at the beginning, those algorithms are aggressive and you don't want to spend all your time supervising.

This was us too and we ended up going with YouTube Kids because the suggested videos on regular YouTube were just weird even with controls on. It's not perfect but it's a lot safer than the alternative.

YouTube Kids is worth it just for the peace of mind. Regular YouTube with parental controls is better than nothing but YouTube Kids actually filters the algorithm which is the real problem. Your wife has a point on this one.
