Daughter asked hard questions about faith today

My 8 year old asked me why God lets bad things happen if he loves us. I froze for a second because I wanted to give her a real answer, not just brush her off. We talked for like an hour about suffering and trust and how God works through hard times. She asked if we could pray together and we did. Made me realize I need to be more intentional about these conversations instead of just hoping they pick it up at church. Feeling grateful she feels safe asking me these things.

Eight is still young enough that she's genuinely curious without being cynical about it yet. I'd say lean into what you actually believe instead of what you think she should hear. Kids can tell when you're being real.

Man, that's a tough one and honestly it shows your daughter is thinking deeply about faith. I'd say honesty is your best friend there - it's okay to say 'I don't have all the answers but here's what I believe' and then just sit with her in that question.

That's a tough one. My daughter hasn't hit me with that yet but I know it's coming. I think the honest answer, even if it's just I don't know yet, might be better than trying to have all the answers ready. What did you end up saying?

Those questions are the hardest because there's no perfect answer. Whatever you told her, I'm sure she appreciated that you took her seriously instead of brushing it off. That's what she'll remember.

8 year olds ask the realest questions don't they. I think it's actually great she feels safe enough to ask you this. Whatever you told her, the fact that you engaged honestly with it probably meant everything.
