How do I explain why we don't do Christmas the way other families do?
My 8 year old came home asking why his friends got so many presents and why we focus more on the birth of Jesus than getting stuff. We're not super strict about it, we do give gifts but it's simple and the focus is church and celebrating Christ. How do you guys explain this to your kids in a way that doesn't make them feel left out or weird? I want them to understand the true meaning without making them feel deprived. My wife thinks I'm overthinking it but I want to make sure my kids grow up valuing what really matters.
This is a good question and honestly your kid asking it means you're doing something right. Just be honest that your family celebrates the meaning part, and maybe show him how generosity and kindness can happen other ways too.
