How do I teach my kids about money without teaching them to love it?

My oldest is asking about saving money and investing. I want to encourage responsibility and hard work but I'm terrified of making him materialistic or focused on the wrong things. How do you balance teaching financial wisdom with teaching that money isn't everything? We talk about generosity and giving but I feel like there's more I should be doing here. What does this look like in your families?

My oldest is asking the same stuff right now. I'm trying to frame it as tools for freedom rather than chasing money, you know? Like savings gives you options, it's not about being greedy.

This is tough because kids are watching how you actually handle money way more than listening to what you say about it. We try to be intentional about giving and not being materialistic but it's constant work.

Great question. I think the key is showing them you use money as a means to an end, not an end itself. What matters more to you - how you teach them or what you actually do with your own money?

I let my kids pick something to donate once a month and we talk about why. Seems to help them see money as something that can do good, not just something to hoard.
