How do I teach my kids honesty when I mess up?

So yesterday I told my 8 year old I couldn't go to his soccer game because I had to work. Truth is I just wanted to stay home and watch the game on TV. He found out and called me out on it. I felt horrible. How do you guys handle it when your kids catch you being dishonest? I know I need to model integrity but I'm not perfect and sometimes I take the easy way out. Any advice on how to address this with him and actually change my behavior?

Man that's heavy. Did you tell him the truth after? I think that's the key - not just admitting you lied but explaining why you did and that it was wrong. Kids understand that better than we give them credit for.

I skipped my daughter's event last month for a dumb reason and I still feel it. You're modeling honesty by admitting it though, which matters. Just talk to him about it.

This is a real parenting moment right here. Honestly the fact that you're thinking about this and feeling bad about it means you're doing better than you think. Kids need to see their parents mess up and own it. That's how they learn.
