My 10 year old caught me losing my temper at another driver yesterday and called me out on it. He said 'Dad you always say we should be kind but you were really mean.' Killed me because he's right. I preach patience and grace but my kids see the real me at home and it's not always pretty. How are you guys actually living out what you teach instead of just saying it?
That kid just gave you a gift, honestly. Kids catch everything. I told my oldest I was sorry the next time I lost it in front of him and explained that dads are learning too. He seemed to get it way more than I expected.
The fact that he said something shows he respects you and knows better. I've had those moments on the trail with my boys when I've snapped at something and they give me that look. Best thing is to apologize and let him see you actually trying to do better next time.

This is the stuff that keeps me up at night. We want them to see us as examples but we're just doing our best like everyone else. At least you're aware of it and trying.
The walking the walk part is impossible if you expect perfection from yourself. My kids know I mess up. What matters is what I do after I mess up.
Man, getting called out by your own kid hits different. But that's actually a good thing. Means he's paying attention and he cares. I'd use that as a moment to talk about how you're still working on being better, not perfect.

Man, that's tough but also kind of awesome that he called you out. My kids have done the same thing to me and it stings, but it means they're actually listening to what you're teaching them. I'd just own it with him, tell him you messed up and you're working on it too.
