How do you handle it when your kids question your faith?

My 12 year old asked me why he should believe in God if bad things happen to good people. I froze. I tried to explain theodicy but honestly I'm not sure I did a great job. How do you guys approach these conversations with your kids? I want to give them real answers, not just Sunday School responses.
