How do you talk to your kids about the hard stuff?

My oldest asked me why bad things happen to good people after our neighbor's house burned down. I froze. Gave him some answer about God having a bigger plan but it felt hollow. How are you guys handling these conversations? I want to teach them faith without making it seem like I have all the answers, because I don't.

Man, that's a tough one. I'm still in the fog with my newborn, but I think you did better than you think just by listening to him. The fact that he felt comfortable asking says something.

Those are the conversations that keep me up at night too. Sometimes kids just need to know you're there and you care enough to try, not that you have all the answers figured out.

I don't have answers for the big questions yet, but I've been thinking about how I'll handle this stuff when my kids get older. You're probably harder on yourself than you need to be about it.
