My 6yo asked me a question I couldn't answer about God

She asked why God lets bad things happen if He loves us. I gave some answer but honestly I wasn't satisfied with it either. I want to give my kids real faith not just platitudes but I also don't want to mess them up. How do you handle hard questions without either dismissing them or making faith seem impossible? This is harder than I thought.
