My son asked me if God is real

My 9 year old came to me out of nowhere yesterday and asked if God is actually real or if it's just something parents say. Caught me completely off guard. I tried to explain faith and what I believe but honestly I fumbled through it. I want him to own his own faith and not just believe what I tell him, but I also want to point him in the right direction. How have you guys handled these conversations?

That's a big question and honestly how you answer it matters more than the answer itself. I told my son the truth about what I believe but also said that it's okay for him to figure out what he believes too. Depends on your faith tradition though.

This is where being a dad gets real. You can't dodge it or make it cute. Just be genuine with your answer and your faith. Kids can tell when you're being real vs when you're just saying what you think you should say.

Out of nowhere is right. Kids are wild with these questions. I'd suggest being honest but simple. Don't over explain or get into theology. Just tell him what you believe and why, then let him sit with it. He'll probably have followup questions for the next month though.
