Teaching kids about giving when money's tight

We've been blessed but also been through some lean months. My wife and I wanted to make sure our kids understand that giving isn't about how much you have. We picked a local family the church told us about and had our kids help pack food boxes. Watching my 9yo understand that other kids don't always have what she has was powerful. She asked if we could do it more often. Grateful for how God works through our kids.

Growing up we did stuff like this and honestly it shaped how I think about money now. Your kids are gonna get it. The lesson sticks way better when they see you actually doing it, not just talking about it.

Teaching that lesson early is huge. My wife and I try to do the same thing - show our kids that giving isn't just when you have extra, it's about priorities. Lean months have actually been good teachers for us.

Love this approach. Kids get it when you show them giving doesn't require being loaded. We do little things like spare change donations and my kids are way more excited about that than big checks would be.
