My 8 year old got birthday money and immediately wanted to spend it all on himself. I've been thinking about how to teach him about being generous and honoring God with what we have without just forcing him to give. Started talking about tithing and helping others but want to make it meaningful, not legalistic. Any of you guys found good ways to help your kids understand generosity comes from the heart?
We did an allowance system where my kids could earn money and then we'd talk about giving some to causes they cared about. Makes it feel like their choice rather than us forcing generosity on them.
At 8 years old he's still figuring it all out, honestly. My oldest spent his birthday money on junk he forgot about in a week, but now at 12 he gets it. Sometimes you just gotta let them learn the hard way.
Good instinct to address it. My approach has always been matching what they give - he gives $5 to a cause, we throw in another $5. Makes him feel like he's part of something bigger than just his own toys.
Eight year olds are still pretty concrete thinkers so spending it immediately makes sense to them. We had success by splitting the birthday money into jars - spend, save, and give. Let him put some in the give jar and pick a charity or cause he cares about. Makes generosity feel less like a lesson.
I've been struggling with this too. What helped was not forcing it but asking questions. Like 'what do you think someone without food might need?' instead of telling him he should give. He came to it himself that way.
8 is still pretty young to get generosity naturally. I'd say show him examples. Take him with you when you help someone, volunteer together if you can. Kids learn generosity by watching it, not lectures about it.
That's the age where you can start explaining opportunity cost. Ask him what he'd want in a month if he doesn't spend it now. Sometimes letting them make the wrong choice and learn from it teaches better than any lecture. Kids need to experience consequences.
The immediate gratification thing is so normal at that age. We started doing birthday money with our oldest and she actually got it once we explained she could pick something REALLY cool if she saved for a month instead of grabbing the first thing.

This is the real parenting challenge right there. My 7yo got birthday money and wanted a new video game immediately. We talked about giving some to church and he actually got into the idea. Started small with just 10 percent. Gotta make it their decision though.
