Teaching kids generosity when money is tight

We don't have a ton of extra money but I want my kids to understand giving. Started having them pick a cause or person each month to give their allowance to, even if it's just a few dollars. Last month my 9yo gave to the homeless shelter and it meant more to her than any toy could. Seeing her understand that giving matters more than having has been incredible. Anyone else doing something similar with their families?

Generosity isn't about having a ton of money, it's about the mindset. I think kids who grow up watching their parents give from what they have actually learn more than kids whose parents just throw money at charity. This is smart parenting.

I love that you're teaching this lesson when money is tight. That's actually more powerful than if you were wealthy. Your kids will learn that giving is a choice, not just something rich people do.

Two kids here and we're doing something similar. They get way more excited picking a cause together than we'd expect. Really sticks with them.

This is such a good approach. We started something similar where the kids pick out canned goods to donate each month. It's made them way more aware of people who don't have as much. Even small amounts matter when they're learning the value of giving.
