Teaching my kids about honesty the hard way

My 7 year old lied to me about breaking my favorite coffee mug yesterday. He said the dog did it. Later my wife saw him accidentally kick it and he started crying. I had a choice to yell or use it as a teaching moment. We talked about how God hates lying more than mistakes and that he can always come to me with the truth no matter what. He asked if God would still love him. Man that hit different. I told him God always loves us but he hates when we run from the truth. Feels like we turned a corner with this kid.
