Teaching my kids about honesty when I messed up
So I told my 7 year old I couldn't afford to take him to the amusement park this summer, but then he saw me buying new golf clubs. He called me out on it and honestly it hurt. I realized I was teaching him that my wants matter more than my promises to him. Sat down that night and apologized, explained that dads mess up too and that we need to ask God to help us do better. Returned the clubs the next day. He's been talking about how proud he is that I made it right. This is what leading by example really means, not being perfect but showing our kids how to repent and change.
Man, this is tough but you're doing the right thing by coming clean. My kids are around that age too and they respect honesty way more than I expected. The fact that you're feeling bad about it shows you care. Just explain to him that grown-ups mess up sometimes but we try to fix it.
Been there. Told my son we couldn't buy something and then had to backtrack. Felt awful but I explained that sometimes I make wrong calls about money and we have to adjust. He actually seemed to understand better than I thought he would.
