Teaching my kids to give instead of just getting

With Christmas coming up my 7-year-old is already making a list a mile long. I want him to understand generosity and helping others instead of just being consumed with toys. We've talked about donating to the food bank but he seems bored by the idea. Any ideas for getting kids actually excited about giving? We go to church but I feel like I need to reinforce this at home more.

That's a solid goal. With my toddler everything is still sticky chaos but we're trying to model generosity even at this age. Your 7 year old is at a great age to really understand it.
